ExclusiveAcer writes off $150 million and loses 300 staff

Acer says it's giving its channels a $150 millionsales allowance - resulting in an operating loss of the same amount - having found "high channel inventory and disputed accounts receivable" in its Europe, Middle East and Africa operations.

The company is also cutting around 300 employees from its EMEA operation, which will cost around $30 million in compensation but will save around $30 million per year.

ExclusiveExpect Windows 8 on tablets, laptops and desk PCs

Microsoft has been showing off the next version of Windows at the Computex technology show in Taiwan. It's codenamed 'Windows 8' and will be designed for touch-centred devices, including tablets, as well as conventional PCs.

The new operating system will work on x86 and ARM-based processors.
