UK gets its first commercial 4G broadband service

Wireless service provider UK Broadband has switched on its 4G LTE system covering the Southbank and Borough areas of Southwark in London. Not only is it the first TD-LTE 3.5GHz deployment in the world, it’s also the first commercial 4G deployment in the UK.

UK Broadband’s 4G services will be available via resellers from May 2012. The first compatible devices will be able to deliver high-speed wireless broadband to homes and businesses; mobile devices supporting 3G and 4G services will be available from September.

Victor Zhang, CEO of Huawei UK, said “Utilising Huawei’s equipment, UKB’s spectrum and our combined expertise, the availability of LTE in the UK from today will give a significant boost to the UK’s Government’s broadband agenda. We are proud to be involved in this project and are dedicated to supporting UKB and the Government to help connect more people to high speed wireless broadband networks.”
