The European Commission has opened two antitrust investigations against Motorola Mobility. It wants to find out whether Motorola has used ‘standard essential’ patents to distort competition and whether its licensing conditions are appropriate. Standard-essential patents need to be licensed on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms.

The move follows complaints by Apple and Microsoft. A similar EC investigation into Samsung is currently underway.
