Windows 8 on Samsung prototype deviceMicrosoft has previewed the next major release of Windows, codenamed ‘Windows 8’, to its BUILD developer conference this week. Features include a touch-friendly interface that’ll also work with a mouse and keyboard, the introduction of ‘apps’ with a ‘Windows Store’ and increased integration with Microsoft’s cloud services.

Windows 8 is designed to work on ARM-based chipsets and x86 devices, from tablets to laptops and PCs. Partners include AMD, Intel, NVIDIA, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments.

Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows and Windows Live Division at Microsoft, said “We reimagined Windows. From the chipset to the user experience, Windows 8 brings a new range of capabilities without compromise.”
