Sony has announced that the successor to the PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld gaming device - which had been codenamed NGP - will officially be called PlayStation Vita.

It’s due to launch before the end of the year in two versions; a WiFi-only model costing €249 in Europe and a 3G/Wi-Fi model for €299.

PS Vita will have a 5-inch multi-touch organic light emitting diode display and a multi-touch control pad on the rear. There’ll also be two conventional joysticks and two cameras. Overall size is approximately 182mm x 18.6mm x 83.5mm.

The device will be preloaded with a location-based social networking app called ‘near’ and a chat feature called ‘party’.

Sony’s PS Vita will be catalogued as the PCH-1000 series and will run an ARM Cortex-A9 quad-core processor.
