LG announces multimedia streaming for smartphones, smart TVs and PCs

LG Electronics is launching a beta version of its LG Cloud service, enabling users to enjoy photos and videos across the ‘three screens’ of Android smartphones, PCs and smart TVs.

Content is streamed in real time without the need to download it to the device.

Microsoft forms new eBook partnership with Barnes and Noble

US-based bookseller Barnes & Noble has formed a partnership with Microsoft that’ll bring together Barnes & Noble’s digital ‘eBook’ and College education businesses.

The new company will be a subsidiary of Barnes & Noble and will be 17.6% owned by Microsoft, which is investing $300 million in the business.

Everything Everywhere commissions research into the value of 4G for the UK

Research carried out by Capital Economics and commissioned by Everything Everywhere shows that the faster download speeds delivered by 4G LTE mobile broadband could add 0.5% to the UK’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by the end of the decade - the equivalent of £75 billion.

In addition, 4G in the UK could also create or safeguard 125,000 UK jobs and is expected to drive £5.5 billion of private investment into the UK economy by 2015.

Visa Europe mobile wallet to hit the UK this autumn

Visa Europe says its new online digital wallet service, V.me by Visa, will be available to a select group of consumers in the UK, Spain and France from autumn this year. Further details, including information about participating banks and retailers, will be announced soon.

V.me by Visa will let consumers add several different credit/debit cards to their digital wallet and then access the service via PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone.

Last week mobile phones and health were back in the headlines together, rather like love & marriage or salt and vinegar. The news is pretty much as we’ve heard before; this time it’s the UK Health Protection Agency’s independent Advisory Group on Non-Ionising Radiation telling us there’s no convincing evidence that mobile phone technologies cause adverse effects on human health – but longer-term research is still needed.
