Samsung working with Toyota to create in-car smartphone solution

Samsung Electronics has announced a partnership with Toyota Motor Corporation that’ll help Samsung’s smartphones connect with Toyota’s in-vehicle entertainment systems.

The project is called Samsung Car Mode Application and it’ll use smartphone-based voice controls for navigation, location-based services and other functions.

Nuance is acquiring virtual assistant Vlingo to enhance its voice control

Nuance Communications has signed an agreement to acquire virtual assistant service Vlingo.

The current Vlingo Virtual Assistant mobile app can understand the user’s intent and will take the appropriate action when given a spoken command.

Google Dictation - "I shall say this only once"

Back in January 2010 I wrote a brief review of the Google Nexus One that included my thoughts on the not-so-accurate voice dictation feature. From the marketing hype, I had expected to simply speak into the phone and a few seconds later my words would appear as a perfectly formed text message. The reality was somewhat disappointing. For all but the simplest short phrases it struggled to produce the intended words, making it inferior to even the touch-screen keyboard.
