10,000 mobile phones are likely to be stolen in London this month

A new advertising campaign from the Metropolitan Police is warning people to appreciate the value of their possessions and to protect them from the risk of street robbery.

Radio advertisements and posters are reminding Londoners to protect mobile phones, tablets, jewellery and cash - although it’s phones that are the favourite target for thieves.

UK regulator cuts off malware text message fraud

PhonepayPlus, the UK’s premium rate telephone services regulator, has taken the sting out of malicious mobile apps that sent premium rate text messages.

The malware attack, which was named RuFraud by security experts, involved fake versions of popular Android applications including Angry Birds, Assassins Creed and Cut the Rope.

USA plans stolen mobile phone database

Wireless communications trade organisation CTIA-The Wireless Association has announced that it’s been working with the US federal government, law enforcement agencies and a number of its members to help deter smartphone thefts and protect consumer data.

It’s introducing four voluntary industry commitments: implementing a database that’ll keep stolen phones offline, encouraging consumers to set up security on their new devices, informing users about ‘remote control’ security options and educating people about phone theft risks.

Mobile industry losing 6 per cent of revenue through billing issues

A new report from Juniper Research reveals that the mobile telecommunications industry lost more than $58 billion last year due to inadequate Fraud Management and Revenue Assurance processes.

That’s over 6% of global industry revenue.
