With instant-pay apps, wallets can stay home

A lot of people gave up carrying much cash a long time ago, since they knew ‘plastic’ - a credit or debit card, or a store or public transit ‘smart card’ - would be accepted just about everywhere.

But to hear tech companies tell it, plastic cards will be museum pieces as well before long.

Motorola cuts jobs, Digia acquires Qt and Starbucks partners with Square

Starbucks partners with Square for mobile payments in USA

Coffee chain Starbucks has partnered with mobile payment company Square to introduce the ‘Pay with Square’ app at around 7.000 US Starbucks stores. In addition, Square will process Starbucks’ US credit and debit card transactions.

Starbucks is investing $25 million in Square with its chairman, Howard Schultz, joining Square’s Board of Directors.

Oh, how cheerful we were last Monday. Apple previewed iOS6, which will bring mobile tickets (and 200 other new features) to the iPhone and iPad this autumn. Vodafone cut the cost of using your phone in Europe with its flat-rate £3-per-day EuroTraveller deal and a few days later Three came up with its own ‘unlimited’ European data roaming.

Yet by the end of the week there were fewer smiles in the mobile industry.

Square now has two million mobile payment users in the USA

US-based mobile payment service Square, which enables payments to be taken via a plug-in card reader for mobile phones, says over two million individuals and businesses are now able to accept credit cards and debit cards using its app. A million people started using Square within a year of launch, with another million joining during the following six months.

The company currently processes over $6 billion in payments per year.
