Fon adds a million new WiFi hotspots in less than 6 months

WiFi hotspot community Fon says it now has over four million Fon hotspots worldwide, up 30% from the three million hotspots it announced at the beginning of the year.

Martin Varsavsky, Fon CEO and founder of the five-year-old company, said “Four million hotspots is an amazing figure and proof that the Fon model works. Together with the spike we are seeing – one million new hotspots this year alone – the Fon network is achieving the footprint and rapid growth we have dreamed of. In just four months, we’ve added more hotspots to the Fon network than other WiFi networks – iPass, Boingo, Trustive and KT – offer to their customers in total.”

Fon produces ‘Fonera’ WiFi routers that give users their own encrypted private broadband service as well as broadcasting a public signal for registered members of the Fon community. The service is also available to BT Total Broadband customers and by paying for online access via Fon hotspots.
