Jolla smartphone with Sailfish OS now available to pre-order

Finnish smartphone company Jolla has started taking pre-orders of its first device.

Its phone, which runs the Sailfish OS and has a 4.5-inch display, is currently priced at €399 (£337) plus shipping. Full details aren’t known but it’ll run a dual-core chip and will support 4G.

Jolla demonstrates its MeeGo-based Sailfish mobile user interface

Finnish company Jolla, which launched in July with plans to release a smartphone with a user interface based on the MeeGo platform, has demonstrated its user interface and the ‘Sailfish’ OS at the Slush start-up conference in Helsinki.

In addition it’s announced a forthcoming software development kit for Sailfish.

MeeGo-based Jolla mobile user interface to debut next month

In July we reported that a new Finnish company called Jolla had been formed from a team of specialists that had worked on the MeeGo-powered Nokia N9. It planned to release a smartphone with a new user interface based on MeeGo.

A few days ago Jolla Ltd announced a new ecosystem alliance to support a MeeGo-based mobile OS codenamed ‘Sailfish’ and today it’s confirmed a date for the public unveiling of its user interface.

It was a good week for technology stories hitting the mainstream news, thanks to the apparent appearance of a Higgs boson, Sir Alan Sugar’s YouView online TV service and football goal-line technology.

Mobile-related news hasn’t been quite so big, although plenty of well-known names have turned up in the headlines. What’s also been turning up – rather more than usual – is the presence of WiFi.
