We’re back from Mobile World Congress – and what a show it was. Located at a new site that saw more visitors than ever before, the show had everything… except any particularly obvious theme from hardware manufacturers. Last year was the year of the quad-core smartphone, this year there was plenty of incremental innovation but nothing truly startling.

O2 launches 'TU Go' VoIP app in the UK

Customers can make 'mobile' calls from any compatible internet-connected device

O2 UK has launched a new application that enables customers to link their O2 mobile number to any compatible device for calls, text messages and voicemail.

It’s called TU Go and follows Telefonica’s launch of the TU brand last year.

Sky to acquire fixed-line broadband and telephone service from O2 and BE

British Sky Broadcasting Group plc has agreed to buy the O2 and BE consumer broadband and fixed-line telephone businesses from Telefónica UK. Adding these half a million customers will make Sky the second-largest provider of broadband in the UK.

Sky is paying Telefonica £180 million for the deal, with the option of an extra £20 million if the transfer runs smoothly. It currently has 4.2 million broadband customers and 4 million telephone customers.

Major UK networks all win 4G spectrum in Ofcom auction

BT is fifth 4G UK winner

Telecoms regulator Ofcom has announced the winners of the UK’s 4G mobile spectrum auction, which has finally been completed after more than 50 rounds of bidding. It means that faster mobile broadband services will soon be offered to more people by more companies.

The UK’s major mobile networks - Everything Everywhere Ltd (EE), Hutchison 3G UK Ltd (Three UK), Telefónica UK Ltd (O2) and Vodafone Ltd - have all won radio spectrum.

Mobile World Centre opens in Barcelona ahead of Mobile World Congress

Just over a week before Mobile World Congress 2013 begins in Barcelona, the GSMA has been involved in the opening of another MWC.

This is the Mobile World Centre - officially known as the Mobile World Centre Barcelona Espacio Movistar - and, unlike Mobile World Congress, it’s designed for consumers as well as for people working in the mobile communications industry.
