M2M growth helps satellite phone company Iridium

Mobile satellite communications company Iridium Communications has reported its financial results for the second quarter of 2012.

Thanks in part to the estimated lifespan of the company’s satellite constellation being longer than previously expected, net income was up 51% year-on-year to $17.7 million (£11.4 million). Total revenue for Q2 was $97.3 million, up 1% year-on-year.

Satellite phone business Iridium announces annual results

Global satellite communications business Iridium has reported financial results for the fourth quarter and full year of 2011.

It ended the year with 523,000 total billable subscribers, up 22% from December 2010 when it had 427,000 customers.

Twitter now available via SMS on satellite phones

Twitter has announced partnerships with the Iridium and Thuraya satellite phone services to give their customers access to Twitter via SMS.

It means the service is now available without any need for land-based communication.

Iridium has more than half a million users

Iridium Communications says it’s reached 500,000 subscribers for its satellite voice and data services worldwide. Around 10% of these are US Government workers.

It says recent growth has been helped by the machine-to-machine data market, with M2M data subscribers representing 32% of commercial subscribers and 21% of government subscribers.
