UK government plans to speed up mobile broadband roll-out

The UK government has started a consultation about its plans to speed up the roll-out of mobile broadband services in England. Its consultation document, entitled ‘Mobile connectivity in England’, sets out proposed changes to planning regulations.

This would make it easier and quicker for networks to erect new masts and put other antennae on buildings.

This week there was only one set of financial results that attracted the mainstream tech media. Apple reported the first drop in quarterly profit for several years as figures fell by 18% to around £6.1 billion. On the positive side, it made around £6.1 billion profit. It also announced dates for its developer conference in June and promised a new version of iOS.

ZTE signs an Android-related patent deal with Microsoft

Microsoft says mobile phone manufacturer ZTE has agreed a licensing deal that provides coverage under Microsoft’s patent portfolio for smartphones and tablets using the Android and Chrome operating systems

Last week Microsoft announced that Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Hon Hai had signed a similar license agreement covering Hon Hai and its Foxconn subsidiary.

Nokia bans HTC from using STMicroelectronics microphone

Nokia has won a court injunction in Amsterdam that prevents HTC from using a microphone made by STMicroelectronics.

The microphone, which is part of the flagship HTC One smartphone, has apparently been developed exclusively for Nokia.
