Quarterly profits up for Microsoft

Microsoft has published results for the third quarter of its current financial year, revealing a new record revenue figure.

Quarterly revenue reached $20.49 billion for the quarter (£13.42 billion; up 18% year-on-year), while net income was up 19% to $6.06 billion.

Microsoft signs Android-related patent deal with Hon Hai

Parent of Foxconn is latest company to license patents from Microsoft

Microsoft has agreed a worldwide patent licensing deal with Hon Hai, the parent company of Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Foxconn. It’ll cover Hon Hai for producing smartphones, tablets and smart TVs that use the Android and Chrome operating systems.

Full details are confidential but Microsoft will receive royalties from Hon Hai.

Coalition of tech companies makes European complaint about Google and Android

A group of technology companies including Microsoft, Nokia and Oracle has complained to the European Commission about Google’s mobile internet strategy.

The 17 companies are calling themselves FairSearch and describe Google’s distribution of the Android platform as “predatory”.

Nikon signs Android-related patent agreement with Microsoft

Nikon Corporation is the latest company to sign a patent licensing agreement with Microsoft. It covers a number of Nikon cameras that use the Android platform.

Full details aren’t being disclosed, although Microsoft has announced it’ll receive royalties from Nikon.
