Google announces Android Jelly Bean mobile OS and Nexus 7 tablet

The Google I/O developer conference has seen the company make a number of major announcements today. It’s confirmed the next version of its Android mobile operating system, it’s expanding the Google Play application store and it’s launching two new Nexus-branded devices.

More than 400 million Android devices have now been activated, with an average of twelve new Android devices now activated every every second.

Android 4.1: Jelly Bean

Version 4.1 of the Android platform is code-named ‘Jelly Bean’, following the alphabetical list of dessert names that have been used for previous releases. It’ll be rolled out from mid-July.

Jelly Bean promises an updated user interface, improved voice search and a new feature called Google Now. Google Now delivers time-related information when it’s required; for example, it can show traffic news before a user starts their daily commute.
