Apple says that educational content from its iTunes U store has been downloaded more than a billion times.

iTunes U was launched in May 2007, offering downloadable multimedia lectures and demonstrations from a variety of schools, colleges, museums and universities.

UK adults spent almost £42 billion on technology this year

Brits spent almost £1000 each on tech

This year adults in the UK spent the equivalent of £933.72 each on technology, according to a new survey from price comparison site uSwitch.com. The research looked at all tech-related spending, from equipment to apps.

The most popular tech choice in the UK was a smartphone (chosen by 48% of respondents), with 28% of adults buying a tablet, 22% buying a ‘non-smart’ mobile phone and 18% choosing an ebook reader.

Amazon.com makes a quarterly loss

Amazon.com has announced financial results for the third quarter of its financial year.

Net sales were up 27% year-on-year to $13.81 billion (£8.57 billion), although the company made a $274 million net quarterly loss. Most of the loss was due to the company’s investment in the LivingSocial local discount business.

Barnes & Noble and Microsoft complete their Nook Media partnership

In April we reported that US-based bookseller Barnes & Noble was forming a partnership with Microsoft to combine Barnes & Noble’s digital eBook and College education businesses. The as-then unnamed company would be a subsidiary of Barnes & Noble but with Microsoft owning a 17.6% share.

Barnes & Noble and Microsoft have now completed the partnership deal, naming the new company NOOK Media LLC.

New Barnes & Noble Nook tablets coming to the UK for Christmas

US-based online and high-street bookshop Barnes & Noble has launched two new tablets in the USA and the UK. The 7-inch NOOK HD and 9-inch NOOK HD+ will support more than 2.5 million eBooks, electronic magazines and apps. In addition, B&N says TV shows and movies will also be available in the next few weeks.

Pre-orders will begin next month, with availability expected towards the end of November.
