Neelie Kroes calls for an end to mobile roaming charges in Europe

Neelie Kroes, Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for the Digital Agenda, has called on European MPs to end mobile roaming charges.

In a statement, she said “I want you to be able to go back to your constituents and say that you were able to end mobile roaming costs. I want you to be able to say that you saved their right to access the open internet, by guaranteeing net neutrality. I want you to be able to say we took real action on cybercrime and other threats.”

Syniverse sells part of MACH mobile roaming business to Starhome

Mobile roaming, messaging and networking Syniverse is selling part of MACH to complete its takeover process.

Syniverse has been given the go-ahead to acquire its rival but the European Commission insisted that most of MACH’s data clearing and near real-time roaming data exchange business in the European Economic Area was sold to another buyer.

Ofcom explains its next steps to reduce the risk of ‘bill shock’

Last March, UK telecoms regulator Ofcom published the findings of its review into ‘bill shock’ caused by unexpectedly high fixed-line and mobile phone bills.

It found that mobile phone customers with ‘pay monthly’ contracts were most likely to suffer an unexpectedly high bill, with the worst cases caused when customers used their phones outside Europe.

Condiment-based puns aside, it’s a serious matter that could see key players from the deal charged with cooking the books.
