Government says UK smart metering roll-out will take longer than expected

The UK government says the roll-out of ‘smart meters’ for gas and electricity supplies will now begin in autumn 2015, according to the Department of Energy & Climate Change. This work had previously been expected to start from next summer.

The completion date for all UK homes and businesses to have smart meters has also been moved.

ITV launches new Android version of catch-up TV application with exclusive Samsung deal

UK commercial television broadcaster ITV has announced a new version of its catch-up television player for Android devices.

The free ITV Player app offers access to the last thirty days of content across ITV, ITV2, ITV3, ITV4 and CITV channels. However, unlike previous versions it’s only available for selected Samsung smartphones and tablets.

UK government plans to speed up mobile broadband roll-out

The UK government has started a consultation about its plans to speed up the roll-out of mobile broadband services in England. Its consultation document, entitled ‘Mobile connectivity in England’, sets out proposed changes to planning regulations.

This would make it easier and quicker for networks to erect new masts and put other antennae on buildings.

Virgin Media launches new 'unlimited' mobile tariff

Virgin Media has revealed a new ‘unlimited’ mobile phone tariff that offers unlimited calls to 0870, 0800, 0845 and 0808 numbers as well as unlimited mobile data, text messages and UK calls.

The package, which also includes a mid-range smartphone with insurance, is called VIP and is priced from £26 monthly for customers who have Virgin Media’s broadband, TV or home phone service. Other customers will pay £31 per month for the two-year minimum term contract.
