LG creates secure 'bring your own device' version of Optimus Vu smartphone in USA

LG Electronics has created a version of its Android-based Optimus Vu smartphone that offers business users a secure device without affecting their personal information. It’s based on the US version of the Optimus Vu - known as the Intuition - and has been created in partnership with Verizon Wireless and VMWare.

The device offers what LG describes as ‘Privacy and Business (P&B) Virtualization’ and is intended for companies that have a ‘bring your own device’ policy. According to LG, the VMWare solution splits the operating system in half, allowing the user to install and use their own data and applications while running a secure IT-controlled environment for business applications.

Boaz Chalamish, senior vice president and general manager of End-User Computing at VMware, said “LG and VMware are addressing the challenges IT departments face every day due to BYOD and the consumerization of IT. Creating a separate virtual workspace on a mobile device enables IT to provide security and control, while also reducing the burden and liability of managing the entire device. This approach strikes the best balance between addressing IT security needs and end-user freedom.”

LG already plans to offer P&B Virtualization on more of its mobile devices in the future.

I think the Optimus Vu phone for the USA offers some interesting features for enterprise such as the dual OS system for work and play. Still I think the real issue is data security and transfering data which this doesn’t really address. A trend I am starting to see grow is that of making custom BYOD data security apps for their employees phones, which seem to be very cost effective. Example, Tigertext now has a secure texting API called TigerConnect that companies are integrating into their own data security apps for SOX and HIPAA compliance, and I think is very telling in that companies are taking this option seriously.

Predictions for 2016: Network Function Virtualisation, 4G throttling and video calling

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.

Kapture review: the audio-recording wristband

A 'recording watch' that links to your smartphone

Mark Bridge writes:

The most memorable moments in life often go unrecorded. You don't have your camera in your hands. Your finger is still hovering over the 'pause' button on your audio recorder. Or you were simply too busy experiencing whatever was happening. It's all about the one that got away.

That's where Kapture can help.

Device detection and responsive design explained

Mark Bridge writes:

James Rosewell shows me a colourful roll of paper that's the width of an iPhone but well over three metres long. When I look closer, I can see it's a printed copy of the Wall Street Journal's mobile website. That's a lot of scrolling to do... and a pretty unfriendly user experience for anyone reading the news online. Why does it work so badly?
