New Qualcomm 64-bit mobile processors will support 4K video and 55 megapixel cameras

Qualcomm has announced its newest ‘Snapdragon 800’ mobile processors. The Snapdragon 810 and 808 chips are designed for for flagship smartphones and have been described as the company’s highest performing platform to date.

Both are 64-bit processors, which gives them a significant performance advantage over 32-bit chips, and support 4G LTE Advanced connectivity with a maximum theoretical data speed of 300Mbps. The higher-spec Snapdragon 810 processor also supports 4K Ultra HD video, HDR video and camera image sensors of up to 55 megapixels.

Murthy Renduchintala, executive vice president at Qualcomm Technologies, said “The announcement of the Snapdragon 810 and 808 processors underscore Qualcomm Technologies’ continued commitment to technology leadership and a time-to-market advantage for our customers for premium tier 64-bit LTE-enabled smartphones and tablets. These product announcements, in combination with the continued development of our next-generation custom 64-bit CPU, will ensure we have a tremendous foundation on which to innovate as we continue to push the boundaries of mobile computing performance in the years to come.”

The Snapdragon 810 and 808 processors are expected to be available in commercial devices by the first half of 2015.

Patents were a very popular topic of conversation last week. Google sold its Motorola Mobility smartphone business to Lenovo but hung on to most of the patents. Does this mean the patents were the most valuable part of the business? Well, when you look at the difference between the original purchase price and the sale price, it seems a reasonable conclusion.

FM radio activated for BlackBerry Z30, BlackBerry Q10 and BlackBerry Q5 users

There was great news for some BlackBerry owners this week. The new 10.2.1 update to the BlackBerry 10 OS was released, offering a new incoming call screen, SMS and email groups, more options for locking and unlocking, extra battery usage information, enterprise features and - for customers with a BlackBerry Z30, BlackBerry Q10 or BlackBerry Q5 smartphone - an FM radio.
