50% of mobile traffic will be VoIP in 10 years

As we’ve said many times on The Fonecast, Mobile VoIP is an inevitability – but that doesn’t stop some mobile networks doing their best to disrupt it (and others, such as 3, taking advantage of it).

Researchers at Gartner have now put some figures to the situation, calculating that more than half of all mobile voice traffic will be carried end-to-end over VoIP in ten years’ time – with 30% going via third-party portals. However, they say that things won’t really kick off until 4G networks are being used, which they reckon is 2017. [Press release]
