Twitter sees 62% more mobile users within last five months

Twitter's mobile strategy, which has seen the creation of Twitter for iPhone, Twitter for BlackBerry and Twitter for Android applications, has resulted in a dramatic increase in mobile phone users of the micro-blogging service.

In a blog post this week, Twitter CEO Evan Williams said the total number of mobile users had jumped 62% since mid-April. In addition, 16% of new Twitter users now start on mobile – and 46% of active users regularly interact with Twitter via mobile.

Although the most popular access method for Twitter's 145 million registered users is still the standard website at twitter.com, the mobile site (m.twitter.com) and SMS text messaging are the second and third favourite applications. 14% of users accessed Twitter by using the mobile web in the past 30 days, while 8% used text.
