Growth for Android and Windows Phone in the UK

Figures from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech show that Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform is gaining market share in the UK, although Android and Apple still dominate.

The first quarter of 2013 saw Windows-based devices accounting for 7% of smartphone sales in the first quarter of 2013, up from 2.9% a year ago.

Android rose to claim 58.4% of the UK market, while the Apple iOS share dropped slightly year-on-year to 28.9%. The RIM/BlackBerry share fell to 5.1%.

Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, said “Android is the top selling OS across key global markets, only beaten by iOS in Japan and now accounting for 93.5% of the Spanish market. We expect to see a further spike in its share in the coming months, as sales from the HTC One start coming through and the Samsung Galaxy S4 is launched. This will pile pressure on Apple, BlackBerry and Nokia to keep their products front of consumers’ minds in the midst of a Samsung and HTC marketing blitz.”

In the USA, Android had 49.3% of smartphone sales, followed by iOS with 43.7%. Windows Phone had a 5.6% share.
