HTC and LG add high-end features to lower-spec smartphones

HTC has revealed a new entry-level smartphone that includes some of the features first introduced on the flagship HTC One.

The HTC Desire 310 offers the ‘BlinkFeed’ home screen, which aggregates information from social networks and other news sources. It can also combine photos and video clips into video highlights.

This Android-based handset runs a 1.3GHz quad-core processor and has a 4.5-inch screen plus a 5 megapixel camera. Availability will begin in Taiwan next month.

Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation, said “Everybody today wants a smartphone that can keep up with them, regardless of whether it is a flagship or entry-level model. The latest addition to our renowned HTC Desire range combines super-fast processing and premium features at a lower price, offering users the best possible experience in this category.”

Meanwhile LG Electronics announced the L90, which is the first smartphone in its L SeriesIII family. The original L Series was introduced at Mobile World Congress 2012. There’s a 1.2 GHz quad-core chip, a 4.7-inch display and either an 8 megapixel camera or a 5 megapixel camera depending on the destination market. Features include ‘Knock Code’, launched on the LG G2 last year, which lets users turn on and unlock their phone by tapping a rhythm on the screen.

It’ll launch in the CIS region, followed by availability in other countries.

Dr Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics, said “With its competitive specs and exquisite design, we expect the L90 to continue the success of the L Series in the global marketplace. It offers the very best of LG in design, hardware, OS and UX features so 3G smartphone users worldwide will be able to enjoy a truly first-class smartphone experience.”
