Telefonica and Dolby to promote high-quality audio in smartphones

Telefónica - the parent company of O2 in the UK - and Dolby Laboratories have signed a global agreement that’ll see the two companies working together to drive the adoption of premium sound in smartphones.

As part of the deal, Telefonica will offer its customers “the best devices from leading handset manufacturers” with Dolby Audio technology, which can enhance audio to improve dialogue, keep volume levels constant and eliminate unwanted noises.

Francisco Montalvo, Global Devices Unit director for Telefónica S.A., said “This alliance addresses a real need now that people are increasingly using their smartphones and tablets to watch movies and TV shows, play games, or listen to music. As mobile entertainment devices, our smartphones and tablets deserve to have the high-quality surround sound that Dolby offers.”

We spoke to Andy Dowell of Dolby in our podcast from Mobile World Congress 2012. You can listen to the interview via the built-in audio player on our website or by downloading the MP3 file.
