The Google gPhone is alive! (possibly)

A couple of years ago you couldn’t move for news stories about the Google ‘gPhone’ and how the internet company was planning an own-brand mobile phone. Then those rumours gave way to the Android open-source operating system… and eventually to the T-Mobile G1 – the first of many Android-powered handsets.

But now financial website TheStreet.com says Google is getting into the handset game for real. It’s quoting Northeast Securities analyst Ashok Kumar who expects a Google-branded mobile phone to turn up in retailers before the end of this year. However, other analysts remain unconvinced by the story.
