Premium rate regulator PhonepayPlus looks at app-based mobile payments

Premium rate telephone service regulator PhonepayPlus has started a ten-week public consultation on app-based mobile payments.

The regulator introduced a new Code of Practice on 1st September. It’s now planning to add a guidance document on ‘Applications-based payments’. These notes, although not legally binding, set out the regulator’s likely interpretation of its rules in the event of an investigation.

Potential concerns include lack of price transparency, security issues, complaint handling and a straightforward way to stop any charges.

Comments on the plans are requested by 5th December 2011.
