Less than one in five smartphones have malware protection

A new report from Juniper Research shows that more than 80% of business and consumer owned smartphones will not be protected by a mobile security product at the end of 2013.

It notes that consumer awareness of mobile security products is increasing but says there’s relatively low consumer awareness about online attacks on mobile devices. In addition, many consumers believe the price of security products is excessive.

The report expects nearly 1.3 billion mobile devices around the world - including smartphones, feature phones and tablets - to have mobile security software installed by 2018, up from around 325 million this year.

Mobile security risks are also increasing, with the number of Android-based threats expected to exceed 1 million this year, according to data published by Trend Micro in January.

As I've stated umpteen times before, smartphone owners should not have to worry about this. Yes, they need to be mindful of what they click on and not be foolish, BUT they shouldn't have to shell out any more money for software when the app stores and ad networks of the world could - and should - be doing more to prevent malware from reaching our phones in the first place. Google has made some progress here, Airpush is doing great, and iOS is still safe (though getting less safe over time) but there are a ton of app stores and ad networks out there who have ignored mobile malware to the detriment of mobile users. It's reckless and it's just plain wrong.
