Open Automotive Alliance aims to bring Android to more cars

Audi, GM, Google, Honda, Hyundai and NVIDIA working together

Google has teamed up with technology company NVIDIA and motor manufacturers Audi, GM, Honda and Hyundai to create the Open Automotive Alliance. It’s a partnership that aims to bring the Android platform to more cars.

The OAA says it’s dedicated to a common platform that will drive innovation and make in-car technology safer and more intuitive for everyone. Cars with Android integration from OAA members are expected by the end of 2014. The group says other automotive and technology companies are welcome to join the OAA.

Sundar Pichai, senior vice president of Android, Chrome & Apps at Google, said “Millions of people are already familiar with Android and use it everyday. The expansion of the Android platform into automotive will allow our industry partners to more easily integrate mobile technology into cars and offer drivers a familiar, seamless experience so they can focus on the road.”

Last year, Juniper Research predicted that a fifth of all cars in Europe would have app-enabled multimedia systems by 2017, while ABI Research anticipated 4.3 billion apps in cars by the end of 2018.
