iPhone now free on O2 with 2-year contract

To quote the O2 Press Release: “Heard the rumours about iPhones getting cheaper or free?  Well, it is getting cheaper but only with a new 24 month contract…”

O2 is going to be offering the Apple iPhone 3G free on a two-year contract from 3rd April 2009. The 8GB iPhone will be free on the £34.26 ‘pay monthly’ tariff and the 16GB iPhone will be free on the £44.05 tariff. It’s not quite the stock clearance many people were expecting… which reinforces suspicions that any new iPhone this summer won’t be much smarter than the existing product.

O2 has also confirmed it’s talking to Apple about the ‘tethering’ option that’ll let iPhones with OS 3.0 be used as modems – and has admitted that its current terms and conditions don’t allow this. [Press release]

And in the USA, AT&T will be offering the iPhone SIM-free (well, "commitment-free" anyway) from Thursday next week from $599 for the 8GB version.
