Apple buys its own mapping company?

It’s looks like Apple has bought mapping company PlaceBase, although it’s not made an official announcement. PlaceBase has been seen as a competitor to Google Maps; it’s been offering a chargeable map service that lets users add their own information as an overlay. It’s now being suggested that Apple could be planning to replace Google Maps on the iPhone with its own map service. [Sources: ComputerWorld.com; AppleInsider.com]
