Telefonica releases quarterly and three-quarter results

Telefónica has released its quarterly results along with figures for the first three-quarters of its financial year. Overall, the company reported a 5.4% increase in revenue to 46.7 billion Euro (£39.9 billion) for the nine-month period and a 6% rise in customer numbers to almost 300 million fixed-line and mobile connections worldwide.

However, net income for the period was down 69%. In fact, Telefonica made its first quarterly loss in almost a decade; income for the July to September 2011 quarter fell to a 429 million Euro loss from a 5 billion Euro profit in Q3 2010.

In the UK, where Telefónica UK operates the O2 network, the company had 22.2 million mobile phone customers at the end of September 2011. This represents a 1% year-on-year increase, although the ‘pay monthly’ contract segment saw a 5% increase.
