Leading artists join a new digital marketplace to put art on mobile devices

A number of leading contemporary artists - including Mat Collishaw, Michael Craig-Martin, Tracey Emin, Shepard Fairey, Damien Hirst, Isaac Julien, Tim Noble & Sue Webster, Bill Viola and Wim Wenders - are offering limited edition digital art via a new gallery/store called s[edition].

Collectors can browse through digital works, with images available to view on almost any smartphone, tablet or other connected device owned or controlled by the collector. There’s also a dedicated iPad application. Prices currently range from $8 to $800 (around £500). Each edition is numbered and authenticated. The site says it “aims to build an open culture of responsible collecting”.

The co-founders of s[edition] are Harry Blain, who founded the Haunch of Venison and Blain|Southern galleries, and Robert Norton, former CEO of Saatchi Online, Managing Director of King.com North America, and Head of e-commerce at AOL Europe. The company’s headquarters are in London.

Harry Blain said “We believe that s[edition] allows new global audiences access to works by the world's leading artists. The digital format is one that many artists are already working in, and many more in the future will encompass as a part of their practice.”
