Microsoft announces 'preview' beta version of Windows 8

Microsoft has taken advantage of Mobile World Congress to announce the public ‘preview’ (beta) version of Windows 8. It also demonstrated the updated operating system running on a variety of tablet and laptop devices.

The new Windows OS has a ‘tile’ interface similar to Windows Phone devices. There’ll be a Windows Store with applications from third-party developers and from Microsoft, along with a preview version of Internet Explorer 10. Cloud-based services offer the option of sharing information across Windows-based PCs and Windows Phone handsets.

Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows and Windows Live Division at Microsoft, said “With Windows 8, we reimagined the different ways people interact with their PC and how to make everything feel like a natural extension of the device, whether using a Windows 8 tablet, laptop or all-in-one. The Windows 8 Consumer Preview brings a no-compromises approach to using your PC.”
