By 2016, more than half of all tablets are expected to be low-cost devices

The ‘media tablet’ market has grown out of almost nothing during the past three years, with more than 220 tablets now on the market worldwide. However, although the Apple iPad currently leads the market, a new report says its share will suffer because of new lower-cost tablets with smaller displays.

ABI Research says sub-$400 tablets (below £250) will take 60% of the media tablet market by 2016, cutting the iPad’s dominance.

Jeff Orr, ABI’s group director of consumer research, said “The majority of new entrant media tablet models have been in the sub-$400 segment that focuses on growth markets like India and China. The strong wave of growth in this segment over the next few years is expected to be driven by the adoption in emerging markets.”

Although tablets with a larger screen - nine inches and above - accounted for more than three-quarters of media tablets last year, the trend in the next few years is expected to see more devices with a screen size of between seven and nine inches.
