iZettle releases API to integrate card payments with apps

Mobile payment solution provider iZettle has made its application programming interface available to developers, enabling its card payment technology to be incorporated within other applications.

The beta programme of iZettle’s mini chip-card reader and app launched in the UK last month, giving almost anyone the ability to turn an iPhone or iPad into a credit card terminal.

Jacob de Geer, iZettle’s CEO, said “We started iZettle to make it possible for everyone to take secure card payments. Now we’re making our API available so even more merchants and apps can use our solution. A food delivery company or event organising platform may already be using iPhone or iPad apps to take orders or issue tickets but often they can only take card payments online and not at the point of delivery or event. iZettle’s API will streamline this type of sales process by allowing companies to integrate our payment solution with their procurement or company applications. Ultimately, our API makes it easier and faster for users to process sales.”

The iZettle solution works with chip-enabled credit and debit cards. It’s EMV (Europay, MasterCard and Visa) approved and is compliant with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS).

More than 50,000 people currently use iZettle in Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway and the UK.

We spoke to Jacob de Geer at Mobile World Congress in February. You can listen to the interview (which starts after around 12 minutes) via the built-in audio player below or by downloading the MP3 file.

They do not support Visa at the moment. That is rather a major drawback. Other options one can look into in Europe is mPowa.
