O2 UK service starts returning to normal

A network problem that disrupted O2’s mobile phone service in the UK yesterday is gradually being restored. O2 says all 2G services were returned to full working order this morning, with full 3G service expected to be restored today.

The problem, which didn’t affect all of the network’s customers, prevented tens of thousands of mobile phones from making or receiving calls, text messages and online communication. Customers using O2 via the Tesco Mobile and giffgaff virtual mobile networks were also affected.

O2 described the issue as being “due to a fault with one of our network systems, which has meant some mobile phone numbers are not registering correctly on our network”.

UPDATE 2pm: O2 says 2G and 3G services are now back for all affected customers.
