Mobile data traffic in 2017 will reach eight times more than this year's total

A new forecast from ABI Research says the global volume of mobile data traffic will exceed 107 exabytes in 2017, eight times more than the anticipated total for 2012. However, it points out that this doesn’t mean a ‘data tsunami’ is on the way.

Aapo Markkanen, senior analyst at ABI Research, said “It looks like 2015 will be the last year when the traffic volume will grow by more than 50% annually. And that will happen despite of the fact that the monthly average per wireless subscriber, worldwide, will increase to almost 1.5 gigabytes by the end of our forecasting period.”

ABI says much of the overall data consumption will depend on how much on-demand video content will be delivered over cellular networks. It also points out that inadvertent data consumption has been a surprisingly large source of traffic.
