New report says worldwide smartphone shipments up almost 50% from last year

Juniper Research estimates that 230 million smartphones were shipped worldwide during April, May and June this year. That’s an increase of almost 50% from the same quarter last year and almost 13% up from the previous quarter.

Samsung increased its share of the market by shipping an estimated 72 million smartphones, which gave it around 31% of all smartphone shipments in the quarter. However, its recent results announcement noted that high-end smartphone shipments were slowing.

Apple was the only leading vendor to experience a decline in smartphone sales from the previous quarter, although its year-on-year growth was up by 20% to more than 31 million. Its global share of smartphone shipments slipped from 18% in Q1 2013 to 14% in Q2.

LG announced its best-ever quarter for smartphone shipments, with year-on-year growth of 114% to 12 million devices. Juniper Research also notes that demand in China for lower-spec smartphones led to Huawei, ZTE and Lenovo all exceeding an estimated 10 million shipments each in Q2 2013.

Nokia’s quarterly figures showed 7.4 million Lumia smartphones and 4.3 million Asha smartphones; a total of 11.7 million devices. And BlackBerry, whose financial quarters don’t cover the same periods as its competitors, is expected to have shipped around 6.9 million smartphones in Q2 2013.
