New Windows Phone 8 update promises support for phablets

Microsoft has released details about the forthcoming update for its Windows Phone 8 operating system, which is being made available to customers during the next few months.

The new update - known simply as Windows Phone 8 Update 3 - will offer support for devices with 5-inch and 6-inch screens, offering manufacturers the ability to produce larger-screen ‘phablets’ as well as smartphones. There’ll be room for more Windows Live Tiles rather than simply enlarging the images.

In addition, update 3 will support Qualcomm’s quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor.

There will also be a new ‘Driving Mode’ that limits notifications and a ‘Mobile Accessibility’ suite that can help blind and visually impaired users.

It’s now three years since Microsoft’s ‘Windows Phone’ platform was released.
