Android is now Europe's 2nd favourite mobile OS

The latest data from the comScore MobiLens service shows that almost a quarter of European smartphone users now have an Android device. However, Symbian still remains as the most-used operating system.

Jeremy Copp, comScore Europe vice president for mobile, said “Smartphone adoption has seen significant growth from the previous year, driven in large part by the increasing popularity of the Google Android platform. Although Symbian continues to lead the EU5 smartphone market, Android is gaining fast and recently passed Apple to become the second most popular platform. Network operators, publishers and advertisers looking to effectively reach the European mobile audience must pay close attention to the continued growth of Android in the region, as it will likely have far-reaching implications for the mobile media landscape.”

Smartphone usage in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom was measured during July 2011. 88.4 million mobile subscribers across the five chosen EU countries said they used smartphones, up 44% from the previous year. Android was the fastest-growing smartphone platform, increasing its market share from 6% last year to 22.3% this year. Symbian, which retained the overall lead, saw its share slip from 53.9% to 37.8%.
