RIM forced to drop BlackBerry BBX name

The US Federal Court has granted a temporary restraining order against Research in Motion that prevents RIM from referring to its new BlackBerry operating system as ‘BBX’. BBx is a trademark of software company Basis International. The order stops BBX from being promoted at RIM’s BlackBerry developer conference in Singapore this week.

The court ruling says “despite the fact that the two companies are not direct competitors, the parties’ respective BBX products are highly related and target the same class of consumers, that is, business application software developers .”

It looks as though the next-generation of BlackBerry operating system - announced in October - will now be called Blackberry 10.
