NEC stops producing new smartphones

Tablets and fixed-line phone business continues

Japanese technology company NEC Corporation says it has stopped developing, making and selling smartphones via its NEC CASIO Mobile Communications business. The smartphone business is controlled by NEC, with Casio and Hitachi each owning a minority share.

Models already on the market will continue to be supported. In addition, NEC will continue developing and producing conventional mobile phone handsets and will also continue operating its tablet business.

Employees of the NEC CASIO Mobile Communications employees are expected to be redeployed within the NEC Group, with a particular focus on its ‘Social Solutions Business’.
