70% of electricity customers in Europe expected to have smart meters by 2022

Figures from wireless analyst firm Berg Insight show that 70% of electricity customers in Europe are expected to have smart meters by 2022. The current figure for smart meter penetration in Europe is 24%; that’s the equivalent of 67.9 million smart electricity meters, most of which are in Italy, Spain and the Nordic countries.

By 2022, it’s forecast that a total of 199.7 million units will be installed, with nationwide rollouts expected in France, the UK, the Netherlands, Austria and Ireland.

Next year, shipments of smart electricity meters in Europe are expected to grow by 30% to 8.4 million units, eventually peaking at 25-30 million units per year in the early 2020s.

The installation of smart gas meters is currently lagging behind electricity meters. There are believed to be 2.5 million units in place across Europe at the moment - a penetration rate of around 2% - with national rollouts expected to drive this to 49 million units (40%) by 2020.
