Nokia launches ‘Point & Find’ real-world search service

Nokia has launched a beta version of Nokia Point & Find. It’s rather like a mobile internet search engine that is prompted by the phone’s camera, not by typed search terms. Users can find relevant information and services on the internet by pointing their mobile phone camera at real-life objects. However, it’s only available when businesses provide their own data. The beta version of Nokia Point & Find focuses on movies (e.g. point your camera at a film poster and watch the trailer or find a local cinema) and is now available in the UK and the USA. The technology behind ‘Point & Find’ was initially developed by PIXTO, a Californian company that Nokia acquired in 2007. [Press release; October 2007 press document (pdf)]
