New York cabs to block mobile phones... but only in the front?

The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission, the agency responsible for licensing and regulating the city’s yellow taxicabs and an assortment of other vehicles, is apparently considering the option of mandating mobile phone signal blockers for all cabs. Its new Taxicab Passenger Enhancement Program (T-PEP) contains a suggestion that mobile phone signals should be electronically blocked for cab drivers whilst still permitting rear-seat passengers to make and receive calls. Other ideas include the introduction of a ‘frequent user’ scheme and biometric security to prevent vehicle theft. Feedback and comments about the NYC TLC's plans are being accepted until June, when a decision will be made. [Sources: NYDailyNews.com; NY1.com]
