Messaging app WhatsApp has more than 250 million active users

Mobile instant messaging app WhatsApp has more than 250 million monthly active users, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. The company, which launched in 2009, recently confirmed a new daily record of 27 billion messages handled.

These figures suggest WhatsApp has a similar customer base to Twitter and Skype.

WhatsApp offers a cross-platform real-time messaging service for Apple, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone smartphones.
