Google announces new Nexus 5 smartphone and releases Android 'KitKat' v4.4

Google has announced a new Nexus smartphone that’s been developed in partnership with LG.

The Nexus 5 has a 4.95-inch HD display, offers 4G connectivity and combines a 8 megapixel camera with optical image stabilisation. It runs Android on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 2.3GHz processor and is priced from £299 ($349) via the Google Play online store.

As well as including Android v4.4 on its new flagship phone, Google is also releasing the new platform for other compatible devices. In a blog post, Google senior vice president Sundar Pichai said “The first thing you’ll notice about KitKat is we’ve made the experience much more engaging: the book you’re reading, the game you’re playing, or the movie you’re watching - now all of these take center stage with the new immersive mode, which automatically hides everything except what you really want to see.”

There’s deeper integration of Google services into this new version of Android, faster multitasking and wireless printing. In addition, Google says the new KitKat update uses less memory, which means it’ll run on lower-spec devices.
