Kenyan students use bicycles to charge mobiles

Kenyan electrical engineering students Jeremiah Murimi and Pascal Katanaare have devised a dynamo-powered mobile phone charger that’s now being backed by the country’s National Council for Science and Technology. With mains power not available in many Kenyan towns and villages, mobile phone users often end up paying shops to charge their phones.

Although human-powered chargers are not a new idea, the new charger is designed to use the dynamo that’s already fitted to the back wheel of most Kenyan bicycles. A battery can be fully recharged after an hour’s journey. [Source: BBC News]
